Visit the LighthouseThe restoration of the Lighthouse will be completed in Fall 2007. After completion of the restoration, volunteers will be available during designated hours to provide information and limited guided tours. The tours will enable visitors to climb to the top of the 74-foot tower for spectacular views of the lakefront, park and city. Travel InstructionsFrom Interstate 43 in Milwaukee, go east on Interstate 794. Take the Lincoln Memorial Drive exit and go north on Lincoln Memorial Drive for 2.2 miles. Turn left opposite McKinley Park Beach and drive up the hill on E. Water Tower Road. Turn right on Terrace Avenue and make a quick right onto Wahl Avenue. The lighthouse will be on your right after about half a mile, near the southern end of Lake Park. ParkingVisitors will arrive at the west entrance to the North Point Light Station, but no general visitor parking will be available on site. Those in need of parking will be directed to the parking lot at Lake Park Pavilion. From the parking lot, visitors can access the Lighthouse by a short walk through Lake Park. Educational ProgramsThe educational component of the Lighthouse operation will provide an important link between a child’s current history and social studies curricula. It will show how such history has, over the course of time, continued to impact our economy, our modes of transportation, communication methods and trade, resulting in products that reach all corners of the world through water transportation. Trained docents will work with both elementary and middle school principals, teachers and neighborhood children’s groups to develop a responsive program that will address the learning needs of each age group that may tour the facility. Work is also currently being done to launch an “immersion experience” for children and adults that will provide a unique environment in which to expose people of all ages to this sense of history and the critical skills that are part of the maritime experience. Docents may be available to participate in introductory presentations prior to corporate retreats, business meetings or special receptions with community groups. |
